1) It’s a damn good idea if you are writing a series to know where they are going. I am SO afraid of writing one of those series which feels like it’s still going just because. Because. No other reason. Not because the characters have more lives to live, but just to continue it. I want my characters to have a purpose, and not continue more than needed.
2) In case an agent asks me how many I can write. I don’t want to saying, “um…three, or four, or possibly even five”. I know mostly what’s going to be possible, but I don’t know how long everything is going to take.
Therefore I’ve written this very rough, nobody-else-read, first draft of the plotlines for the rest of my series.
I’m now ready to start putting them together into novel outlines and more detailed scene by scene information. At the moment it’s general stuff. An overview of what’s going to happen, but not actual series. For example:
“They end up together, but I’m going to be hesitant about it” – very brief, there needs to be many scenes in between for the couple in question to get together.
I’m scared, because although it’ll be awesome to know how it unfolds and picture the scenes in my head (and maybe even write some of them if inspiration hits), it’ll also be scary to know when it’ll be over.
In my head I like the idea of three or five books. I like odd numbers (Thanks, Amber!), but I’m not sure if I could fill five novels. And again, I do not want to write filler novels. Maybe I could write five, I’m not sure. A couple of months ago I wrote a scene for book two and one of the narrator’s brothers gets aggro about something I really didn’t think was going to come up. It was a complete surprise for me, but if I catch onto that thread, I could be its own subplot adding more content.
But if it’s only three novels, that idea utterly depresses me. To be finished in one and 3/4 more books. It’s sad. Although I am planning to write prequels and other spinoffs involving minor characters after the original series, I’m not going to be able to revisit the MC’s romance. The prequel will probably involve them, but they wouldn’t be together yet, so I can’t, you know, have them sneak off for a secret make out session behind the stable.
*sighs* writer problems 😛
